In the highly dynamic space of Bigg Boss 19, two contestants who had had numerous run-ins during the first ten days of the season are leaving viewers puzzled for a different reason. Baseer Ali and Farhana Bhatt are both strong, opinionated contestants and were verbally fighting with each other in some capacity nearly every day of the season. Ironically, in the last episode, it was evident that things were changing – the two of them had gone from being equally relentless enemies to what appeared to be a flirtation.
What started with another argument in the morning that looked just like all the other arguments to me through the first ten days, ended up with friendly fun banter through the day. The interactions felt lighter with some teasing and casual remarks. At one point we hear Baseer compliment Farhana’s look and while she joked about it (with eye rolls) there was clearly more than just arguing occurring.
The peak of their relationship was when Baseer complimented Farhana’s eyes. For a split second, the activist who is typically assertive and resolute recognized an opportunity to showcase a shy smile, a softer side that had not yet been seen, much to the delight of not only Baseer, but the other housemates who required a break from the raging battles that defined their relationship. In most senses of reality television, Baseer has had enough experience to know how to create moments that get eyes on the screen, but to give an activist a platform like Farhana has proven to do is command space in any conversation. They both played their own individual games up to that point, but if anything, this display of warmth implied a newfound dimension to their relationship.
With neither housemate up for eviction this week, there is time to let their relationship — whatever form it takes — develop at its own pace. Whether it ultimately develops into a friendship, flirtation, allyship, or purely something else, it doesn’t matter; it has re-engaged the audience’s attention. So in a house that is primarily filled with situations of conflict and competition, one moment of connection can become one of the delineating storylines that sparks the most discussion.
